Step 1
Dark is already on
Black thread, white status bar, dim timestamps. Type the handle that goes in the chat header.

Fill the thread
Add messages and mark each one You or Them. Yours take the gradient, theirs go dark grey.
Step 3
Set the time
A midnight screenshot at 01:14 with a half-empty battery reads truer than 9:41 and 100%.

Three Colours Do All the Work
The black behind everything
A true black thread, not charcoal, so the screenshot sits on a dark video or a black slide without a visible rectangle around it. The header and the message box lose their white fill with it.
The gradient that stays
Your own bubbles keep the blue-to-purple sweep in both modes, and it runs down the thread rather than restarting per bubble — two messages in a row are two different shades. Against black it is the brightest thing on the screen.
The grey Seen
Under your last sent message, dropped to a dim grey rather than the near-black it uses on white. Received bubbles land in the same family: dark grey with white text.
Why the Dark One Gets Used More
Most phones are in dark mode, so a black screenshot matches the screen the person is already looking at. It also holds up better after being reposted: white backgrounds pick up grey blotches around the text every time an image is recompressed, while a dark thread hides them. In a video edit the difference is not subtle — a white screenshot flashes on a dark cut, and a black one does not. That is most of why the storytime, midnight-message and leaked-conversation formats are all dark.
